Sabre rattling doesn't pay
Did you know that there is a “Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation “ between Russia and China? Which is nice if a bit long winded. I am always suspicious of over egging these things, it makes them sound too desperate and unbelievable.
The news that at the same time as the treaty was signed Russia was telling its Armed Forces exactly when it would start to nuke a Chinese invasion, seems to reinforce my point.
It means that Russia doesn’t trust anyone and no one trusts Russia. They have broken treaty after treaty, invaded neighbours and undermined democracy everywhere they can, including in the UK.
I doubt very much if the Chinese trust Moscow as far as they could throw President Putin.
But the leaking of the documents on Russian nuclear policy is just part of a plan. It is all part of an attempt by Russian to suggest that any Western involvement in Ukraine is too risky, might set off a trip wire and escalate very quickly to a nuclear conflict.
It is a bullying tactic and a very dangerous one.
You can play these games if you want, but normally only once. No one believes you if you keep wittering on about it and then do nothing.
But it does reinforce a point, Ukraine voluntarily gave up its nuclear weapons on the promise that it would be protected. We need to do that more than ever now, Ukraine needs to beat Russia with conventional forces, we have loads of them and they need them.
This is a no brainer.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
