Running on empty
One of the biggest problems for the Tory party is not just that they are trying to regain lost voters from Reform by moving ever further to the right when that can never work, it is that you can smell the fear.
Having kicked any half decent members out of the big tent, the quality of advice and policy ideas is obviously awful, but it is worse than that; the ideas they push are inconsistent, contradictory and stupid.
The latest idea ahead of their conference is to abandon policies to deal with climate change, while admitting it is still happening. Kemi Badenoch is going further than abandoning net zero targets which she has already vowed to do and is planning to actually abolish the Climate Change Act itself. Removing all targets and letting the country burn or as she puts it “Under my leadership we will scrap those failed targets. Our priority now is growth, cheaper energy, and protecting the natural landscapes we all love.”
Leaving aside the obvious contradictions in the final sentence, this is madness. Now can you possible reconcile believing that climate change is happening with doing nothing about it?
Well the Tory party thinks it can by claiming to want higher growth and cheaper energy instead.
This is, I suppose, what happens when you try to pander to the climate change deniers without admitting that they are wrong, Reform at least just claims it is all a fraud and a con, I don’t believe them, but it allows them to claim they are consistent and their policies make sense.
The Tory party on the other hand is making it clear they know the world is burning but they are willing to let it happen, just for the distant hope of a few more votes.
Since Reform is hoovering up all the climate nutters, petrol heads and those who don’t care, while Labour, the Lib Dems, the Greens, SNP, PC and virtually everyone else is acting on principle even though the policy is not popular, this leave the Tory party in a very small part of the a Venn Diagram.
At this rate the Tory party will be in 4th place after the next election, not third and they will deserve it.
The first rule of politics is supposed to be an ability to count. Why on earth would you sell out your principles, deny common sense and back damaging polices in order to reduce your core vote?
Unless you are panicking and running scared.

Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

With every policy announcement they move closer to annihilation
I wonder what decent, thoughtful and principled Tories (yes, they are not unicorns, they really could be found) are feeling as they see a once proud party that looked as if it would be around for ever, in such a death spiral...
