Royal not
The news that the nation will have to manage without a Royal Yacht because there are more pressing defence spending priorities is hardly a surprise.
I actually think if Norway can afford a Royal Yacht we can, but the idea it has to be some ocean going liner which “pays for itself” because the world rushes to sign trade deal whenever it hoves into sight, is for the birds.
But the announcement that it will not happen is, apparently, another “betrayal” of Global Britain. I am serious, they really say these things.
A nice yacht to cruise around the UK and drop in on our European allies would be nice but not essential and we are really down to spending only what is essential these days.
But some over sized symbol of nationhood, that is supposed to represent our power and influence in the world is just pathetic posturing that will fool nobody. Nations do not kow-tow because we have a Royal Yacht, not when the RN has been cut to the bone already, we have left the giant alliance that helped project our influence and we are a laughing stock around the world.
Brexit, not Britannia, is the problem.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
