Rishi cares --about the next election
As I said before the Spring statement the Chancellor will do the bear minimum to help with the cost of living crisis and will have to come back to try again later.
So I have got it at least 50% right and we will have to see what happens next. But the callousness of this government is now clear to see. I don’t know if the wealth of the Chancellor means he has no idea what it is really like for the poor but he acts like it.
Nurses, carers, the police and millions of other civil servants all face massive pay cuts but nothing like as bad as those suffered by those on benefits. These have been slashed to the bone already by successive Tory administrations, and they got away with it by telling the vast majority of people in work that this was the right thing to do.
The UK can’t afford to feather nest the lazy etc etc
But this time the Chancellor is boasting that he has enough money for a tax cut in two years time, if he has that money he could spend it today and also his finances are far better than expected, he has billion and billions more to spare.
He choose not to do that, so that he could bribe voters with their own money in 2 years time. It has worked for previous Chancellors but then they didn’t face a population without a real pay rise in 14 years with years more of pain to come.
As I tweeted on Wednesday nothing says “I care” quite like saving money in the middle of a crisis in order to win an election in 2 years time.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
