Rachman reboot
The number of people making the “lifestyle choice” to sleep rough, as the charming Tory party puts it, is 120% higher than in 2010.
What a stunning tribute to 14 years of Tory rule, economic policies and priorities.
By far the largest cause of evictions by private landlords is not arrears or bad behaviour it is “no fault” evictions because the landlord wants to charge more. Meanwhile moves to stop this gouging of renters is stuck in parliament, often blocked by MPs with rental properties themselves.
Councils many of which are on the brink of going bust because of lack of government funding are bearing the brunt of this trend and buckling under the pressure.
This is not a sustainable situation, it is extremely harmful to those trying to rent, landlords are acting like complete shits and the economic damage is huge.
This is what happens if you don’t build enough homes for decades, if you encourage private rather than public rented accommodation, if you sell off social housing and especially if you just don’t care.
Calling any of this a lifestyle choice should have been a passport to political oblivion and public condemnation. Not a stepping stone to a leadership bid.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
