David Cameron has a new job, he is to give a series of lectures at New York University, or to be precise at its Abu Dhabi branch. Not exactly the Reith lectures but nice work if you can get it.
He will be lecturing on “practising politics and government in the age of disruption”. Doubtless he will include the following advice.
Never put party before country
Never call a referendum when losing means decades of irreversible economic, political and diplomatic damage to your country.
If you are stupid enough to do that, win. Make sure the big hitters are on your side. Don’t pull your punches because your friends might want to return to your cabinet. If they lie throw them into the wilderness, if they play the race card fire them, if they cheat or take foreign money throw them under a bus.
Have a plan for if you might lose, like trying to establish that the winners campaigned for a Norway like relationship with the EU and this is what you want to see happen.
Start talking to the EU before your opponents have won your job, therefore trying to limit the damage and set the agenda.
Don’t walk away from the appalling car crash your stupidity caused humming. If you do you might have to wait 7 years for a minor lecturing job in the Gulf.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

Cameron was so arrogant in his calling the referendum and in running the remain campaign. Stupidest foreign policy (and economic) move since Suez
