One year on...
One year on and Brexit is very far from over.
The right wing press is asking where the benefits are and criticising the government for not being radical enough. By which it means slashing rules and regulations designed to keep to keep people safe and secure and allowing British firms to trade with the EU.
Firms are bracing themselves for another round of red tape and expense and there is no end in sight to that. I have not yet seen a simple calculation of how much red tape the government would have to cut in other areas, to make up for the red tape it has imposed at the borders. That would be well worth the effort.
And still Article 16 hangs over the whole process like Damocles Sword.
A desperate government might use it to placate its loony fringe, although even it must know it would make things far, far worse.
Still nothing reassures me that this government wouldn’t happily damage the whole country for a few cheap headlines.
And on that note a Happy New Year to one and all.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
