Quietly, without any fuss and with just a few lines, the new Labour government has shot the Brexiteers horse.
Hidden in the details of something called the Product Safety and Metrology Bill are these lines “this Bill will enable us to make the sovereign choice to mirror or diverge from updated EU rules, so that we can maintain high product safety while supporting businesses and economic growth”.
And with that the curse of Brexit begins to be rolled back, there never was any point in regulatory divergence from the EU and now it is dead. The UK will “mirror” EU rules and regs when it makes sense and it will make sense for British firms and the British economy in the vast majority of cases.
The Tories tried to abolish all EU laws in the UK only to have to immediately admit defeat, then they tried to diverge from those rules and British industry forced them to retreat. Then they thought they could just wait and let the evolution of EU regulations gradually create a situation where the UK no longer complied with them. Now that too is dead.
The infantile, petty minded attempts to force the UK and the EU ever further apart for hare brained and ridiculous idealogical reasons, regardless of the damage it was causing is at an end.
They have failed totally, one of their principle reasons for Brexit is dead, the grown ups are back in charge.
It is a small step but for the first time in 8 years it is a step in the right direction.
The Brexit ultras are going to be mad as hell.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

I gave a distinctly audible cheer when I heard this reported on the news. The new direction of travel has been established. It will take some time to undo the many damaging follies of Brexit, but this is the best news for some time, and won't go unnoticed by our friends in the EU (yes, they are still there).
Big sigh of relief…. Eventually the penny will drop that we may as well rejoin!?
