Oh lucky us
According tot he Chancellor the 0.2% growth rate of the British economy is “laying strong foundations for growth” Which is, of course, utter tosh.
The state is crumbling around our ears as asylum seekers take up every second of the government’s time, in a deliberate attempt to stir up anti immigration sentiment and therefore votes.
The state matters far more than the Tories can ever admit as they think it is a drag on the economy. But good tax systems, laws that work, investment, an efficient civil service, hospitals that aren’t falling apart, a good legal system, working courts, all contribute to growth and attract investment.
We are still as an economy 0.2% smaller than pre covid, living standards have had their worst decade in recorded history, many more tax rises are on the way, food banks and fuel poverty abound, and the government is shredding our international reputation with every announcement.
We are going to be lucky if we manage stagnation for the next couple of years and the Chancellor knows it.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
