Nothing to see here....
Like Lt. Frank Drebin standing in front of the exploding fireworks factory in Naked Gun, Brexiteers are busy shouting “Nothing to see here, move on”.
Or in their more lucid moments “This is nothing to do with Brexit.”
My Twitter feed yesterday was full of claims by Brexit supporters that the chaos at Dover was nothing to do with Brexit. The local MP, Natalie Elphicke, who makes a career out of saying “This is nothing to do with Brexit” repeats the claim in the Daily Express this morning.
It is apparently the fault of the French for being lazy, inefficient or, my favourite, punishing the UK for daring to leave the EU. Why they would want to stop tourists visiting France to spend billions there is never made clear.
Nor do any of the Brexit supporters explain why the infrastructure to deal with more red tape at the new border with the EU has not yet been built. Why more passport lanes were rejected by the government and why it has delayed again and again the tests and checks it agreed to 6 long years ago.
The EU only yesterday started legal proceedings against the UK for not implementing the checks called for and agreed by the UK in the Northern Ireland Protocol. It could do the same for Dover if it wanted to.
Meanwhile this Frank Drebin of a government is banging its head against the wall in the hope of hurting the bricks.
This plot line would have been rejected by the writers of Naked Gun for being too farcical.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
