The ever excellent IFS has been busy during the lockdown and this morning released its report on Covid-19 and its economic and social consequences, chaired by Nobel Laureate, Professor Sir Angus Deaton.
The key findings are summed up as follows:
We are not all in this together when it comes to health; mortality rates are twice as high in the most deprived areas.
We are not all in this together when it comes to livelihoods; the richer and better trained have fared much better.
We are not all in this together when it comes to education; poorer children got less teaching online.
We are not all in this financially; many pensioners are actually better off, many more younger people will lose their jobs.
However don’t go blaming the pandemic, the UK built the society that makes this the inevitable result of a crisis like this one. Covid-19 should be a wake up call that the UK’s society is broken, but the opposite is happening and it is actually making it far, far worse.
