The one thing you can stay about David Cameron is that he is never the last to leave a party. He was taught, at a very early age, that it is rude to be the first to arrive and the last to go, to always thank his hosts and not to wipe his nose on his sleeve.
This doubtless explains why he is no longer shadow Foreign Secretary, he doesn’t want to outstay his welcome. Nothing to do with walking away from another disaster for the Tory party, humming happily all the way to his shepard’s hut.
What might have been? PM at such a young age, the opposition in turmoil, a chance to be the next Thatcher, slashing the state, cutting taxes, revitalising the economy, the first “green” Tory PM.
Then it all comes tumbling down and the only chance of a return to front line politics is a few months in the House of Lords, pretending that the country is still a European power and that as Foreign Secretary, you still matter.
Sorry Dave, you don’t, you threw it all away on an unnecessary and risky gamble to end you own party’s civil war and you lost, big time.
Posing as a statesman and a wise old head once more willing to serve the country he loves was your last hurrah, a nice sinecure, something for the CV before you got booted out, again.
Even to do that you had to claim that you thought now that Brexit was a good idea.
But at least you serve one last purpose, Brexit has destroyed everyone it has touched.
Kier Starmer should put your picture on his office wall as a reminder, the FO probably have quite a few head shots they don’t need any more, ever.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

But of course he will not resign his peerage. That would be silly.
