Not even donkeys
There is a famous and almost certainly spurious claim that a German Field Marshall during the First World War said that British troops fought like lions only to be told by another commander “Yes, but they are lions led by donkeys”.
We are not even led by donkeys these days, the British government has now turned down an offer from the EU to have a serious dialogue, and the odd meeting on issues of mutual importance.
The EU has such arrangements with Turkey, Japan and even China, but the UK turned the offer down flat.
Apparently we can’t be seen to be getting along with the EU, the Ukippers wouldn’t like it, the swivel eyed loons would scream betrayal. During the First World War we doubtless had the odd communication with Germany about prisoner exchanges and so on, but not now.
So there you have it, a government so terrified of its own supporters that it cannot even talk to the neighbours, it would be laughable if it was not so pathetic and tragic.
Seven years after the referendum, with a newish, supposedly pragmatic, realistic PM and our foreign policy is a sad joke and a betrayal of our own best interests.
God only knows what our friends and allies make of this farce, let alone the Chinese.
But I think it is safe to assume they now know we are led by asses.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
