Not close enough
The latest GDP figures, which show no growth at all in the last 3 months, are what you would expect, not least because the trade figures published at the same time show that the Brexit deal the government negotiated is damaging the UK’s business relationship with the rest of the world.
UK trade has failed to recover by as much as our G7 rivals after covid, we are slipping down the league table and ripe for relegation.
This is just as expected, just look at the example of the lace maker forced out of business by new post Brexit VAT rules, a tragedy blamed by the Telegraph on HMRC.
Apparently enforcing the rules its political masters have imposed on the country is the tax man’s fault. To be fair it is an improvement on “it is all the EU’s fault”, or “the French are doing this deliberately to punish us”.
It is at least nearer home and nearer the truth, but not close enough.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
