No reset in sight
The Brexiteers are a strange lot, the paranoia is palpable.
When European politicians expressed hopes that Johnson’s defenestration might allow a reset of their relationship with the UK; it was denounced as proof that the PM had been destroyed by a remainer plot.
Just hoping for a bit of good will and calm discussion is now, apparently, treason.
The candidates for Tory leadership know their electorate and will play this up as much as possible. Liz Truss has a powerful hand, Irish newspapers claim that the Irish government would like “anyone but Truss” in No. 10.
Given the current state of the Tory party, she would win the premiership if she put “ABT” on the side of her campaign bus.
But just think about it. Having already burned the UK’s bridges, the candidate who wins the Tory party leadership will do so by promising to burn the boats as well.
The only solution is for a responsible, sensible, rational government to take over. But that is impossible, the Tories still have an 80 seat majority and now will have a new leader, they aren’t going away.
Even if we get a new sensible government in a few years time, the opposition Tory party will still be yelling treason at every turn.
Which means in ten years time the country will still be deep in this mess, with brexiteers screaming into the wind. The King Lear of Europe -a poor, infirm, weak, and despised old man, with only a fool as a friend.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
