Nissan stays put
It is great news that Nissan is keeping its car plant in Sunderland, the idea that it was ever under threat because of Brexit is shameful and worrying. The details of the, doubtless very generous, deal it got from Theresa May will not be known for decades but that and finally agreeing on no tariffs between the UK and EU seems to have secured the plant and new models for the UK.
It is a pity the same can’t be said for the City of London or services (80% of the UK economy) or even fish but there you go, the UK asked for very little and got even less. Business and business organisations were ignored, snubbed and dropped by a Government that set out idealogical red lines for Brexit that inevitably meant whole sectors of the economy got nothing like what they wanted or needed. And it is ideology we still have to fear, the dull monotonous, drip, drip, drip, of Brexit bitterness is starting to be heard: the current deal is a betrayal, the EU is punishing the UK for leaving, it hates the UK and always has, it is deliberately slowing down checks at its borders and imposing unnecessary red tape on plucky British exporters etc etc etc.
This will continue, all problems will not be because the UK government, incompetent, ideologically driven, economically blind and terrified of its own Brexiteers could only get the bad deal that it did. The problems will always be because they were not pure enough, the break was not clean enough, the Civil Service not patriotic enough etc etc etc.
Nigel Farage will be back.
