The Eurovision finals are not an opinion poll and this is not the first time that an entry has scored not a single point. But even so you have to say that there have been lots of times when politics has affected the voting at the annual tournament and given the size and quality of the British music scene it is almost certainly not all down to the quality of the UK’s entry.
Nil points then is a a full on Churchillian two fingers to the UK from the rest of Europe. What did you expect, cheering crowds in the hall waving Brexit flags and demanding that their own country break free from the tyranny of Brussels? The French entry shouting Vive UKIP at the finale of her anti EU torch song? Ireland’s entry to be titled “100 years freedom is enough” sung to the tune of God Save the Queen?
Come on, there is a limit to how long the Brexiteers can keep up this “we love Europe, it is the EU we hate” line. As I commented before when Boris Johnson tried it at the Tory party conference he was met with a deafening silence.
The rest of Europe sees the headlines about the French surrendering, we won the war, German capitulation, if Ireland doesn’t like Brexit they can rejoin the UK and all the rest. Even the more subtle lines about Global Britain and British exceptionalism fool nobody, it is all about not just leaving the EU but lording it over the “idiots” who remained and finding a new place in the world, one that isn’t in Europe.
But the UK has cast itself adrift from its nearest friends and neighbours and has no. new friends to make. No mates and nil points.

We have for many years been "Billy no mates" in Europe so it was no surprise that the UK got nil points. It didn't take the remainers long to start carping!
When we went for Brexit I was looking forward to dumping the Eurotrash Song Contest and saving some money on this rubbish event. It was interesting that Germany was sticking 2 fingers to Europe wearing a great big rubberised hand and they came second last. Voting was traditional Greece gave 12 points to Cyprus and Cyprus gave 12 points to Greece - funny that! I can't see England and Scotland ever doing that?
Of the heavy metal songs I preferred the one that didn't win. The public vote makes a mockery of the contest as folks go out of their way to back an outsider and undermine the politically orchestrated result of Switzerland first and France second. And Australia and Azerbaijan is still in Europe according to the organisers?
So keep carping Jonty!
