Never is a long time
The Tory commentariat are at it again. there is apparently “plenty of money”, HS2 needs to go to “balance the books”, Tories should “never increase taxes”.
What never?
Not during a war or when the country is going bust or when children are dying because their own homes are poisonous, mould ridden death traps.
No, apparently never means never. Under no circumstances, ever.
We could apparently have won WW2 by cutting taxes, those Spitfires would have paid for themselves or perhaps the Laffer curve would have meant we had more money than we knew what to do with.
Saying never just means you are making your own position ridiculous. Just as saying you could borrow hundreds of billions for tax cuts for millionaires was ridiculous.
Sometimes there is the money to cut taxes and do everything necessary like pay for defence and safe housing, sometimes there isn’t.
“Never” is just macho posturing, the kind of macho posturing that got us in this mess in the first place.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
