Apparently the Office for Students is appointing experts to deal with the possible collapse of several universities, hit by the higher cost of borrowing, lower numbers of international students and frozen UK tuition charges (two of which are the direct result of Tory government actions). But the new Labour government will not bail any of them out.
This is just another disastrous result of the Tories willingness to let the state rot and crumble and then walk off humming and blaming the next administration.
It is just another black hole that needs filling, like the courts system which does not have enough courts, judges or prosecutors to deal with the rioters. Or the police who don’t have enough police stations or the prisons without enough cells. Like the army without enough tanks, like…..well the list is endless and very expensive.
All that austerity and all that efficiency, doing more with less and it all turns out to be lies, it was cuts to the bone and ignore the consequences and it has been for years. The best thing for Labour to do is to get all the bad news out this summer and pin the blame on their predecessors, where it belongs.
Oh and rebuild the whole country and the state, that is what 14 years of the worst Tory governments ever have really meant.
Look on my works ye mighty and despair.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

Jeez the truth is fucking depressing, and it’s not as if stopping a few winter fuel payments is going to fill even one hole. A wealth tax surely has to come in the budget. Where else are - who else has - the funds?
Time to look at the fiscal rules. See Mohammed El Erian in the FT today
