Some of you may have noticed that I write for The New European, normally on a weekly basis and then for their website too. Yesterday I got a press release from the Department for International Trade that was so shameless that I immediately wrote a piece for the website of TNE.
That press release said amongst many other examples of vainglorious posturing and strutting that “The UK and Italy have today, agreed a momentous trade partnership to boost UK exports, help create jobs, increase wages and grow the economy.”
Joining the European Union was momentous, the creation of the Single Market was momentous, Brexit was momentous. The damage done to UK exports, jobs, growth and wages is momentous.
This is a memorandum of understanding, a piece of paper which will do virtually nothing to reverse the appalling damage that Brexit has done to trade and relations with Italy, and 30 other countries. It in no way, shape or form can possibly replace membership of the EU or the Single Market.
But in a sense this is cheering news. When the Brexit elites and the government are reduced to this pathetic posturing, when they are reduced to claiming this deal is “momentous”; they really are scraping the barrel.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

It may well be empty nonsense, but there is surely a receptive, ill-informed, inappropriately educated audience for it. Who in the UK's mainstream media is exposing it as nonsense?
