This morning I looked at Twitter/X and found a message from Esther McVey
“First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out Because I was not a communist
Then they came for the Jews And I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me And there was no one left to speak out for me.
Pertinent words re Starmer’s smoking ban”
Now, I don’t know about you but it occurs to me that you have to be a special kind of idiot to think there is any link at all between the Holocaust and the horrors of the Nazis regime and stopping people blowing smoke over other people. Especially since the person claiming this has just stood for election on a platform that included banning all smoking.
Strange that she should have changed her position so quickly, where was her Niemöller moment during the election? When did she defy the whip and speak out for the smokers, warn them that the Nazis were coming for them, hide them and smuggle them out of the country to a free and safe country?
Or is this an appallingly cynical attempt to whip up paranoia, rank hypocrisy and a shameless attempt to somehow link Labour with the Nazis?
It would be bad enough if this was a one off from a has been but Ms McVey is not alone. Many other Tories, are coming up with increasingly ridiculous claims; that the new government is authoritarian, that race riots are free speech, that hate crimes need understanding and that right-wing criminals are being treated more harshly than others.
This is where trying to turn immigration into a grievance and an excuse gets you, in the sewer and unlike Neil Kinnock they are not looking at the stars.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

Having heard some of what she says from time to time, I had concluded she's a nasty piece of work. Hence, this last cack-handed and tasteless attempt at manipulation comes as no surprise :-(
