Only Liz Truss, it seems, can stop a recession. It is due to start in the last three months of this year and she won’t get her feet under the desk of No.10 until September. But only she can stop a recession.
Apparently by cutting taxes which will put more money in people’s pockets, just as the Bank of England is raising interest rates to take money out and curb inflation.
This is not arrogance it is a lie. Even if the UK avoids a recession, and that looks like a near impossibility, it will have nothing to do with Liz Truss.
Also, the money that Ms. Truss thinks is available to cut taxes is fast disappearing as companies and people cut back spending, the recession will take out even more and on a huge scale.
Meanwhile the Tory faithful are being told what they want to hear about, tax cuts, immigration, a war on woke, lefty lawyers, the NIP and lapping it up.
All politicians play to the crowd to get to the top, Yes Minister parodied this brilliantly when Hacker became PM by defending the British banger from Eurocrats.
But this is not a comedy show, millions are increasingly desperate and the recession hasn’t even started. All of a sudden all those who have spent decades cutting benefits and creating a low wage economy are going to find out the real cost of those policies.
Or to be more accurate, the poor, the unemployed and the old and the ill are going to find out. The suffering will be too hard for the government to ignore, or for any normal, realistic government to ignore.
But nothing I see, tells me we are going to get a normal or realistic government.
Just listen to what the candidates are saying.
Yes Minister, would never have used this storyline, it is too ridiculous, incredible, and depressing.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
"But this is not a comedy show..."
When we (and our news media) refer to our politicians, by first name or nickname, as if they were celebrities, and we (and our news media) discuss political matters with the same gravity we confer on matters of entertainment, sport and celebrity gossip, then it's clear that rather a lot of people can't tell the difference.
