Listen and learn
The best lesson I ever learnt at university was from a tutor who told me “don’t listen to what people say, listen to what they don’t say”. It has been the most useful piece of advice, it has served me well.
So when Jeremy Hunt, forced to react to the claim that HS2 won’t reach Euston, says he ”cannot conceive of the circumstances” which would make that happen, that is not a denial. It might be just a lack of imagination.
But far more important than that is the content of the Chancellor’s speech, there wasn’t any. Just the same old tired cliches, the same old mantra about skills and world beating industries. Not a new idea or policy and not even an attempt to claim there were any.
Instead we got lies about Brexit being a source of growth, criticism of those who have opted out of work and the usual rubbish about how everything would be fine if only journalists would stop reporting facts and instead sing the praises of tractor production figures or the success of the 5 year plan or the glorious leader.
Having a Chancellor in the middle of a disastrous recession, who has nothing to say is shocking. The lesson to learn from what he didn’t say is that this government is totally bereft of ideas, policies, and even energy.
It isn’t going to run into the buffers, it hasn’t the strength left to get there.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
