It is quite amusing to see the Daily Telegraph get in quite such a state about its possible purchase by an Abu Dhabi company. This is apparently a threat to free speech, balanced reporting, national security, the British way of life and the freedom of the press. Who knew?
But I have to think that they and no one else in power was worried about the freedom of the press when the Telegraph was owned by a crooked Canadian financier, or when it was owned by twin brothers who lived in tax exile. Nor about the Mail which is owned by a French resident who pays not a penny of tax in the UK, as far as I can see. Nor did anyone move a muscle to stop an American octogenarian have huge influence over British politics. Nor about the ownership of the far right conspiracy spreading GB news, by a NZ billionaire.
You would almost think the Telegraph was against free enterprise all of a sudden, but somehow I doubt it, no it must be what is called “a special case”. One of the very few red in tooth and claw, free enterprise supporting, anti subsidy, anti protectionism “special cases”, that need protection from the bullies with more money than them.
But then if two of your last two billionaire owners have run out of money to prop you up, then you really cannot afford to be too choosy about who is willing to bankroll your increasing unprofitable paper.
I know, I know, it has to be a right wing, white, anglo-saxon, billionaire, willing to throw every penny he owns at your loss making rag. Who uses you like a dirty cloth to spread his message about low taxation, and trickle down economics. But look on the bright side.
Abu Dhabi is very low tax, it will doubtless also encourage you to go further in challenging the science of climate change and pushing covid conspiracy theories, you’ll like that. Also the Middle East is not known for its devotion to liberal, woke, politically correct, left wing human rights lawyers. Its treatment of immigrants is a beacon for British gammons, it supports car ownership and hates heat pumps. Just Stop Oil is its enemy too.
You have so much in common and remember- beggars can’t be choosers, that would be a life style choice.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
