Let's hope the Polls are right
In Poland the thread of democracy is thin and has often been broken, authoritarian governments have recently been stretching it to breaking point again. But if the Polish polls are right the centre ground of decent believers in the rule of law, separation of powers and democracy have won a general election.
An election fought by a government that shamelessly used all the powers of the state and the state controlled media to try to win.
This is great news for Poland, democracy, the rule of law and, of course, the EU.
Many including me think the EU has been far too gentle with those countries which joined promising to be like all the other Western liberal democracies and then once in threw their toys out of the pram and went for nationalistic, populist, racist policies.
But Poland at least seems to have pulled back from the brink.
The UK’s reaction will be interesting, it seemed actually keen to see nationalistic, far right government’s in power, I imagine because it thought they were a counter balance to the EC and the EU and because a significant part of the Tory party wanted to emulate them.
Such shameless appeasement of nationalistic governments and actual support for their governments’ policies, on the grounds that they were somehow anti-woke and anti-immigration and therefore the natural allies of the Tories, tells you everything you need to know about the Tories.
The UK government will doubtless have warm words for the new administration in Warsaw, I doubt the new government will be impressed.
This is another small victory against the right in Europe, including in the UK.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
