The protests by fishing companies in central London yesterday seems to have achieved very little. The Prime Minister, no less, said on Sky news that “Unfortunately, the demand in restaurants on the continent for UK fish has not been what it was before the pandemic,” something that didn’t seem to stop exports before January 1st.
Then, of course, the PM thinks it is the firms fault for not filling in the right forms, and the Foreign Secretary told the BBC on Sunday “I’m not convinced that that is the result of the agreement.” Although there will apparently be compensation, if only for those who "through no fault of their own have experienced bureaucratic delays, difficulties getting their goods through, where there is a genuine willing buyer on the other side of the channel". Which means; having to prove quite a lot to get any compensation, it will be a slow process and it allows the Government to turn down a lot of applications very easily, while claiming to be helping the deserving poor..
It does show however that the protests have achieved something; this is the perfect illustration of what the Government will do with any damage caused by the Brexit deal it claims is a triumph. Deny it is Brexit related, blame covid, blame the firms concerned, reluctantly throw tax payers money at problem and move quickly on.
Nothing to see here, the fishing lobby and industry were what the communists called “useful idiots”, their usefulness is over.
