Let them eat cakeism
The caring heart of the Tory party is on show almost every day.
Like in Pride and Prejudice the poor need cooking advice from the rich, some of whom have never been in a kitchen.
Like in Dickens the poor should be grateful for food banks and not ask for “More”.
The sight of Tory councillors proudly opening a food bank and then tucking into the grub, would have been too outrageous even for Oliver Twist.
Now the poor need to work harder and get better jobs to survive, because of course they are working in low paid jobs out of laziness and choice.
The Chancellor’s claim that he would love to increase benefits but “the computer says no”, would have been too improbable for Little Britain.
The simple fact of the matter is that successive Tory governments have slashed benefits and safety nets, eroded rights and benefits, let house prices soar, forced down wages by destroying workers rights, created a gig economy, let public sector pay dwindle over time to a disgusting extent and all to “make the economy work better”
Tell P&O Ferries workers that the government wants them to get better paid jobs, it is a sick joke.
The fact this has coincided with the worst growth and productivity increases in British history is lost on them. This government wants to force workers to perform for less and less and companies to make more and more money.
The fact this has coincided with the worst growth and productivity increases in British history is lost on them.
Highly skilled, well paid, productive, happy workers with good prospects make and earn more.
You can cut benefits and worker power as much as you want, the UK can never compete on wages alone with China or Indonesia.
It is the political economy of the Poor House.
Some Tories seem to genuinely believe this is a sensible, moral policy. Many just think poverty is not their problem.
But this is the result of decades of deliberate policy, pretending to care about it is rank hypocritical, cakeism.
A pity you can’t eat it.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
