Let them eat.....
OK the Environment Secretary did not actually say “let them eat turnips”, but it was always going to be reported that way and it also plays to a Brexit theme.
When told that orange juice might be more expensive to import after Brexit I remember UKIP getting all moist eyed about the chance to drink fine English apple juice instead, to replant vast orchards of apple and pear trees, press cider in the barn while wearing smocks and presumably have lashings of ginger beer too.
The fact is that this shortage may not be directly caused by Brexit, but it made it more likely, it weakened the UK’s supply chain and logistical system. It made all kinds of shortages more likely and threw vast amount of red tape, and costs on importers and exporters.
Brexiteers don’t care because they can and do always rationalise these problems as being; non existent, unimportant, not caused by Brexit, offset by Brexit gains or some how “worth it”.
So yes, eat turnips, it was not planned but it was in the plan.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
