Assuming the Tory party is going to elect Liz Truss as PM then Labour must be working on its line of attack.
The obvious and easy one is “When you campaigned for Remain you said there would be queues at Dover, now there are queues at Dover you claim it is nothing to do with Brexit, which one is right?”
There are endless variation on this theme, but let me propose another.
“You say you can tear up the Northern Ireland Protocol, which took years to negotiate; why can’t you— make France end queues at Dover/end billions in red tape at the border/make Brussels accept our food without testing it/let business people travel visa free in the EU?” Etc etc etc
The fact is this government cannot do any of these things having negotiated an awful deal and then worked night and day ever since to destroy any trust or sensible relationship with the UK’s neighbours.
Labour, despite the dreams of remainers, cannot campaign and win an election on rejoining. But it is obviously planning to campaign on making Brexit smoother, less painful and more sensible.
In this regard, Liz Truss will be the PM that keeps on giving
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
Why do you think that Labour can't support re-join - recent polls suggest about 60% now think that leaving the EU was a mistake. Of course a few "red wall" voters might not like it, but there's the potential to gain a lot of support in remain-supporting areas like most of South-east England and Scotland which might otherwise to to the LibDems or Scot Nats.
Brexit was a scam. The Labour leadership know this (David Lammy said so in Parliament), but apparently can't now say so publicly because some people don't believe it was a scam. I hear this justification a lot from self-declared intelligent people.
Keir Starmer is a barrister and former Attorney General, yet doesn't possess the ability to explain how and why Brexit was a scam?
