Labour and common sense
Excellent reporting on the BBC this morning showing that it is Brexit that has damaged the UK’s ability to police its borders and control asylum seekers. But it will do little good when the government is determined to whip up fear and hatred to gain support.
Labour on the other hand is going as far as it can to make Brexit work. Keir Starmer will tell the CBI this week that Labour is the party of business and will cooperate with the EU to the nation’s advantage, while ruling out rejoining.
This is a sensible policy, so sensible that it is madness that the current government doesn’t follow it. Rejoining is impossible, divisive and would hand the Tories a huge electoral advantage. Trying to get on with our largest export market is a no brainer.
The reaction of CBI members to the speeches by the PM and the leader of the opposition will be well worth watching this year. Boris Johnson really seems to have decided that “fuck business” is now Conservative policy.
All business wants is some common sense, it must know now it can’t get that from this government.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
