It pays to advertise
Last night I found myself shouting at the TV as Thames Water spent a small fortune on an advert telling me that they are working day and night to repair leaks and upgrade their network.
Maybe if they had spent money on these repairs any time in the last 30 years, had brought down their leakage rate significantly, had built more reservoirs or even spent anything like what is necessary to rebuild their Victorian infrastructure, it would be worth hearing about.
But they were privatised with no debt and pay a fortune in dividends, they do not invest enough and they are not regulated anything like enough. They run a monopoly and they run it very badly with huge profits.
Now we are told that if we want clean water, rivers and beaches it will cost more, paying extra for something the companies are apparently obliged to do already is a con. If the current companies cannot do that with the money they currently have maybe someone else can have a go?
They could save some money on adverts for a start.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
