It is not Oscar Kilo....
The ability of the Oscars to turn an awards ceremony into a glorious foot shooting exercise is beyond compare. This time they have taken a movie starring a brilliant woman in the title role, directed by a brilliant woman and about the role and place of women in society and nominated a man for the main Oscar.
It reminds me of nothing more than when Tina Fey listed the abilities and successes of George Clooney’s wife Amal Alamuddin and then said but “he’s getting the lifetime achievement award”.
It was a very good joke, mainly because it was and is very true and it happens all the time, in lots of different ways. In the UK for instance if a man is knighted, he gets to be called Sir and his wife Lady. If the wife is made a Dame she gets to call herself Lady but he doesn’t get to call himself Sir. Why?
The only possible justification is that everyone is sexist and would assume he had got the award and she hadn’t.
We have to endure endless guff about wokeness and how white men are the new victims of discrimination, when white, male, middle-class advantage is hard wired into the system.
Is it not time we ended that sort of thing?
A new monarch could change it overnight, oh and while he is at it he could change the national anthem too. Maybe we could have something which is not all about him?
Meanwhile Ryan Gosling really ought to win and then refuse to accept the Oscar.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
