Following on from yesterday’s blog about the state of the RN, I came across an analysis of the Army. Which it seems will not have one single armoured division before at least 2030, let’s hope no one notices.
Apparently we have very few tanks because they are all being upgraded. Which makes you wonder why you would upgrade all your tanks at the same time, unless they are all so useless that there is no point in pretending they are any use at all.
Several bad and massively delayed investment decisions have left the Army in this state, with too few people, or weapons, inadequate training and a pathetic reliance on stories about the SAS to keep up the image that we are a significant military power; we are not.
We are a second rate European military power, with huge pretensions and no one willing to admit the true state of affairs.
But the bill to put this right is probably £50 billion plus, that is what 20 years of under investment, cheese paring and flag shagging gets you.
That bill is totally unaffordable, to any government but the alternative is a to admit we are a third tier European power.
No politician will ever admit that, and none is likely to find the money either, our allies and enemies know this.
The UK self delusion goes on, it will not end well.
