If you break it you own it
The Prime Minister, who apparently has the time to fix the European Super League, has yet to fix the Northern Ireland protocol but he is on the job. In an interview with BBC NI due to be broadcast tonight he will claim that he is trying to get rid of the “ludicrous” Brexit border checks, that the protocol has been misinterpreted and border checks were supposed to be light touch. He will say “What we are doing is removing the unnecessary protuberances and barriers that have grown up and we are getting the barnacles off the thing and sandpapering it into shape,”
Johnson also said that if he concluded the checks in the Irish Sea trade were not working in the interests of the UK he would suspend the protocol.
How the very same person who negotiated the deal, signed it, got it through parliament and won a huge landslide on its merits; can continue to get away with saying he didn’t know what was in it, is a mystery. But the PM can sandpaper the deal all he likes, there is still a border in the Irish Sea and he put it there. Even the smoothest, silkiest, softest border is still a border which the Unionists will always hate, tearing up the protocol won’t end the problem as it will rebound on the rest of the UK’s vastly more important border with the EU.
It is and always has been a lousy deal and the PM owns it.
