What could the government do with £42 billion? Free, gratis money that it is owed anyway? This is how much HMRC manages to miss every year, or about 5% of the tax take.
That is not money that is avoided legally because the UK tax system is pretty much voluntary for the rich, this is just how much it doesn’t collect because HMRC is inefficient and underfunded.
But where to find the money to fund tax collecting? Oh look, for every extra £1 the government spends on tax inspectors it makes £18.
Now, no system is 100% efficient but the incentive to make HMRC better is overwhelming, a no brainer, money for virtually nothing.
What could be stopping the government from acting?
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
