How nice
How nice of the PM to host an investment summit at Hampton Court for foreign firms wanting to invest in the UK. I am sure the UK can still run these events as well as ever. Historic palaces, trumpets and drums, flash cars, good food and members of the Royal family on tap.
But none of the money announced was new, as far as I could see, and the elephant in the room was why has FDI fallen for 5 years in a row?
Then Andrew Bailey rather rained on the parade by pointing out growth prospects in the UK are among the worst he has ever seen.
We are, I am afraid, getting used to this stuff, the government is ignoring the facts and trying Johnsonian boosterism instead.
In the end Boris Johnson’s lies caught up with him but the boosterism of Sunak is different.
People only have to look at their bank accounts, the state of their children’s schools, their bills and the NHS and know the economy is in a terrible state and dragging the rest of the country down with it.
Hampton Court is nice, but it bears no relation to the real world.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
