You might think that the right and the Conservatives might want to shut up and lick their wounds for a bit but no, there are already launching their counter attack. In much the same way that Hitler did from his bunker in Downfall, that is not at all.
But they are still ordering imaginary armies around, which gives us a nice idea of what they are really thinking.
In one article of the weekend I read that the appointment of Sir Patrick Vallance as science minister was a disaster as “most of us” know that his actions and advice during the Covid pandemic did more harm than good.
Well, most of us know no such thing, we know that the Tories were inept, two faced and incompetent but apparently they have been forgiven by the right wing because they “know” that lockdown didn’t work and that covid was little more than a bad cold. The covid and vaccine deniers have now taken over Reform and they are coming for the Tories too, helped by a significant number of internal Tory party nutters.
Then you have articles claiming the “real” problems are caused by charities like Stonewall and not the ones in Tufton Street and that we need to leave not only the ECHR, but the WHO too and any other international organisation that “tells us what to do”. Lord Frost hinted at this, some commentators are more honest and out spoken.
Then they are climate change deniers, Net Zero has to die, even as the planet reaches new temperature highs and then they want “their country back”, which means low taxes, for everyone and an end to the “threat of Islam”.
Not sure about that last one, do we deport all Muslims, or just put them in concentration camps or forcibly convert them and push bacon butties down their throats?
The fact is that this noise from the right shows us just why they lost. Just like Brexit they are seeking ever more radical and fantastical reasons why things are not “right”.
In short they are toying with and in danger of being totally taken over by, conspiracy following cultists, paranoid, xenophobic, bigoted and science denying, swivel eyed loons.
The Tories have a very long journey back to respectability, let alone power and the journey just gets longer and longer because they are marching in completely the wrong direction.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

The tory slide to irrelevance and oblivion seems a bit like Hemingway said about bankruptcy - it happens slowly, and then quickly. Suspect it’ll be less of a phoenix from the ashes than a brief glow of rage before eternal darkness (well, a boy can dream)
My late husband swallowed the "Covid is only a bad cold" guff. Until it killed him. I do put some of the blame at Johnson and the right wingers doors. Better leadership may have made him see more sense. I for one welcome Patrick Vallance's appointment.
