Hard choices
The DUP backed and backs Brexit and is suffering the consequences of the deal that Boris Johnson negotiated. Suffering politically that is, the NI economy is doing rather well as a consequence of the deal.
But the DUP will have nothing to do with the deal which is the direct consequence of its mistakes. While it may not matter hugely whether it takes its toys home or not the DUP has friends in Westminster, the ERG.
It wants to kill the Northern Ireland Protocol as well, for it the DUP is just a way of destroying the deal its own party negotiated.
So the big question is, what will the PM do?
He can ignore the DUP/ERG and continue to negotiate with the EU, but the right of the party will scream treason and the DUP boycott Stormont. They want it dead not changed for the better.
Or he can back the DUP/ERG and tear up the deal.
I really can’t see a third alternative, the first will undermine his administration, the second starts a process that could lead to a trade war with the EU.
Party or country?
It shouldn’t be a difficult decision but I bet it is.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
