Four legs good
The Telegraph is safe from foreign ownership, although surely that means its staff will need to change their tone somewhat.
It is bad enough that many of them seem to think that Liz Truss was a misunderstood and betrayed patriotic genius, or that all Muslims are out to murder us in our beds, there are no go zones in London, Brum is an islamic state, Brexit is a triumph but our country is not what it used to be and that Labour want to concrete over every single blade of grass in the country and allow unlimited immigration.
But now the poor things have campaigned and won a battle to keep their company out of the hands of nasty foreigners.
Leaving aside the fact that much of our press is or was already owned by nasty foreigners, right wing tax avoiders, Canadian crooks, French exiles, and American loons, this would appear to be, well, ever so slightly hypocritical.
Have I misremembered the triumphant welcome given to those willing to “invest” in the UK, from Russian kleptocrats, to Middle Eastern governments and rapacious Australian hedge funds?
Did I miss the dismay when foreign governments, and their nationalised industries took over our utilities and bled them dry.
I thought this was all a vote of confidence in the UK and its Thatcherite, red in tooth and claw, free market economy. I thought we all supported capitalism these days and welcomed foreign investment with open arms.
My bad. The rules were clear all along.
His Majesty’s Press Corp can be owned by spivs, chancers, fraudsters, foreigners and con men, just so long as they are right wing, white, Tory supporting, spivs, chancers, fraudsters, foreigners and con men.
Apparently the Torygraph hacks have misremembered badly, been corrupted by counter-revolutionaries, and fallen for traitorous agitprop. But there is still time to re-educate them about the true path.
Repeat after me: four legs good, two legs better; four legs good, two legs better.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
