The Tory party obviously thinks that it can draw a line between it and Labour in the forthcoming general election.
Labour will make you abandon your car, it will force you to spend money you don’t have on a new boiler, it will make you spend on insulating your home.
If the reports are true, Rishi Sunak is about to reverse decades of progress, to gain some votes.
But let us leave aside the fact that the Tory party is willing to destroy the country’s future, see the world burn, see floods kill more people and endanger its children’s future, just in a cynical attempt to win votes.
Look at this from the view point of the car industry.
The government has just given Tata £1/2 billion pounds to make green steel, and £1/2 billion more to build a battery factory in this country. BMW has been given huge amounts of tax payers money to build electric Minis in the UK. Why?
Not only that but every car company in the UK and thousands of their suppliers have been investing a fortune in hitting a target set by the Government years ago, to stop making diesel and petrol vehicles by 2030.
All of that was apparently a waste of time and money and effort, the government has changed its mind. The car industry will be furious, it has wasted a small fortune and been stabbed in the back for purely cynical party political advantage.
The car industry knows full well that electric is the future, there are huge advantages in getting there first. They want and need the security and confidence that set targets bring, now they have none, who is to say the targets won’t be moved again?
Government ministers have been wittering on about just this for years now, that the UK’s future is in green technology, being a world leader, setting green standards, getting ahead of the game, beating our international rivals.
All of that too has been wasted time and effort, all of that is so much dust. Every speech, every proposal, every subsidy, every government plan, every trip to attract foreign firms to this green and pleasant land. A complete waste of time and effort.
What on earth will our friends and allies make of this? I wouldn’t want to be a British minister at the next climate change conference or UN meeting. Who wants to be seen with the callous idiot who has let China off the hook, sides with the Saudis, has broken their word, encouraged and helped every loony climate change denier, led the way for other countries to burn the planet?
Any half decent politician who has spouted the government’s so-called green policies over the last few years would resign if they had any conscience, the Department of Environment should be full of empty, echoing offices this morning.
But no, they will turn around and now attack the Labour party for following the policies they pushed and proudly proclaimed just yesterday.
It may well work for them. They sense a panic amongst desperate struggling families about the cost of green policies. They think they can turn that into an anti Labour wave and ride it to victory.
But to just try that last desperate throw of the dice, they have sold their souls, their conscience, their dignity, their decency, their country and its future, to the dogs.
Every last one of them.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
