Food for thought
It was only a couple of months ago that the then Chancellor proposed a budget that meant tax rises to everyone earning less than £150K a year and tax cuts for everyone earning more than £150K.
Now the Prime Minister is filmed helping out at a kitchen for the homeless, while claiming there is no money for nurses pay rises.
It really tells you all you need to know. Although the Truss/Kwarteng budget was so inept that it is costing the country tens of billions a year that could have been spent on nurses pay or homeless shelters, it was only the logical conclusion of this government’s policies.
As the FT showed yesterday, productivity, real pay and wealth, investment and especially investment in the NHS have been awful for ten years or more.
Basically as long as the Tories have been in power, and the consequences are staggering.
The average French worker is paid slightly more than the average UK worker but does 3 hours a week less work. The average middle income earner in France is also considerably better off because the tax system is less weighted in favour of the rich.
The Tories have quietly and persistently over more than a decade made the UK poorer and less healthy, in an attempt to bolster the rich and deliver trickle down economics.
The consequences are profound and very long lasting, they threw away your money and growth and wealth and now they are struggling to find the money to keep even basic state services running.
Without a plan for long term improvements in growth, productivity and health the UK is doomed to a long spiral of decline.
There is no such plan, just a PM doling out food to the desperate for a photo op.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
