Flat earthers in charge....
There is a common theme running through several major issues at the moment. Who is in charge of the government?
We know it should be the Tory party and especially the cabinet and the PM, but is it?
Brexit was hijacked by the ERG, which insisted on making it harder and harder; killing every possibility of sensible compromise and realistic cooperation.
The covid restrictions are being ended early with the same MPs trying to get cast iron guarantees they won’t be re-introduced. They also want “competitive” scientific advice in future. That presumably means covid deniers and sceptics being given the same weight as the experts who know what they are doing. All of this when the experts think the UK is moving too far too fast; but the PM needs the support of these MPs in his struggle to stay PM, so that is OK then.
Climate change is a very similar problem, climate deniers are now campaigning against Net Zero. Scaring people into thinking this is all too expensive and not necessary.
The thing that unites all these themes is that the proponents are wrong and have massive amounts of support especially in the right wing media. They can also take advantage of the “false balance” that other media insist on using—we must have an audience of 50% flat earthers and 50% experts.
They are all also led by the right wing of the Tory party which clearly has at least a veto on increasingly large areas of policy, sneers at the Whips and suffers from effortless self confidence.
The Militant Tendency never got this far and it took Labour years to purge them, this lot actually have the support of the Tory party membership. They have won control.
Which means if the Conservatives win elections, the flat earthers win.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
