Fighting inflation
Inflation is stubbornly high but fear not the Chancellor of the Exchequer is working on it.
How is not clear, he like all other Chancellors for the last 25 years has let the Bank of England fight inflation with higher interest rates.
That is it. Jeremy Hunt has nothing to do with it, no weapons or levers or power to bring down inflation immediately. He is trying to convince us he does and is working night and day on the problem.
But he isn’t, he is waiting for it to come down as are we all.
Meanwhile the economy is still dragging along the bottom and yet is overheating.
If the Chancellor really wants to help he could try to reform the economy so that it doesn’t overheat like this. But that means long term and boring changes to a thousand little things.
How much easier it is to pretend you are fighting inflation, rather than actually doing something to help.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
