So Kemi is a true believer? Who knew?
Yesterday she came out in favour of a flat rate tax system in the UK, and the right wing is just licking its lips. They just love the idea of selling the electorate a flat rate tax system and watching the billions flow in for their rich backers.
A flat rate means there are no higher rates of income tax, just one basic rate that we all pay. But that means the current basic rate of 20% will have to rise to make up for the billionaires who are no longer paying 40% or even 50% rates but are suddenly paying the same tax rate as their butler.
We could just call it flood up economics or maybe the new poll tax, that ended well for the Tories too.
But what this also means is that Kemi Badenoch is really that shiny eyed, right wing, true believer that they all hoped she was.
It also means that she is the next Liz Truss. Modern societies have taxed the wealthy more for centuries for the very good reasons that they can afford it, the state needs the money, the poor cannot eat if you tax them too much and the rich can, and because it is fair and just.
Tufton Street will be raising the cash as I write, the money to lobby and campaign for this mad policy, write endless articles supporting it, commissioning dubious research “proving” it works. We will hear how it is fairer, good for growth, will make us the envy of the world.
What you won’t hear is that this is what happens when the swivel eyed loons take over a party or that this mad experiment will make the lettuce look like freeze dried nuclear shelter food.
It should make the Tories unelectable, but as they flail around looking for something, anything to separate themselves from Reform, there will be much more of this sort of stuff.
How about corporal and capital punishment? Drowning babies in the Channel? Tearing up the Windsor Framework and the TCA? Controlling judges, and telling teachers what to teach? Voter suppression and gerrymandering?
Take your pick.

Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order
Oh I do hope the tories keep on coming up with total crap like this and guarantee their long, slow slide into irrelevance and oblivion - so thoroughly deserved after their fourteen years mismanaging the county, the economy, and even their own party
Is a flat rate of tax such an aberration of an aspiration? Surely it would be a triumph of society if you could run the country where everyone pays the same percentage of their income? Don’t the billionaires famously dodge paying their 40% rates as a matter of routine? If so, the shortfall already exists, so it’s not being lost with a change of policy.
