Employment rights and wrongs
Many many years ago, when a British government was increasing maternity pay or some such, I asked a leading business organisation, which was complaining bitterly about the costs involved, to find me a company that would be massively handicapped by the new measures.
It took less than five minutes on the shop floor to realise that the manager was a complete incompetent who could barely write a rota, let alone run a production line. The new rules would hardly change anything but would have stretched their abilities to breaking point.
The dreams of Brexiteers that leaving the EU will slash workers’ rights and let industry boom are therefore unlikely to ever come true.
For a start the EU rules are a bare minimum even UK rules are tougher, then you tend to find that efficient companies are nice and generous to their staff and as the hospitality industry is discovering, treating your staff like dirt can come back to bite you.
The way forward is a better trained, paid and managed workforce; trying to win a race to the bottom by slashing pay and rights is bound to fail.
