Dunkirk spirit....
Yesterday the Irish Prime Minister was in Dunkirk, to open a new facility for Irish ferries that will sail directly from Ireland.
The land bridge from Ireland to the EU, otherwise known as England, is now far less important to the Dublin government, they have spent a lot of money by-passing the UK.
They have the full support of the EU in this matter which makes the wet dreams of the Brexit ultras, that the EU will abandon Ireland if the UK is shirty enough, all the more pathetic.
Ireland is in the EU and the UK is not, it has a vote and a veto and the UK has neither. It is abiding by an international agreement it agreed to just last year and so is the EU.
Today in Lisbon, Lord Frost will give his long awaited speech on the UK’s attempt to tear up the NIP, and renege on the deal it signed in December.
It is already a diplomatic disaster before it is given, it is just another reason why the EU no longer trusts the UK.
Ireland is building infrastructure to get round this problem, you don’t do that unless you think things have changed permanently. Dunkirk tells you just how much faith Dublin and Brussels have in the Johnson government and how they expect things to end.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
