Divorce, who knew?
If it was not so sad it would be hilarious, watching the increasing convoluted arguments that Brexiteers now use to claim that Brexit is going wrong through no fault of their own.
We have moved on seamlessly and very quickly from; “We have them over a barrel”, “We hold all the cards”, “The easiest deal in history, over in an afternoon” and my favourite “They need us more than we need them”. Now it is; “This deal was forced on us”, “We were bullied”, “The EU is punishing us for daring to leave” and “They took advantage of our weakness”.
At no point however do Brexiteers admit that this is what they were told would happen, that anyone who understood economics or politics knew where the power rested and how complicated a divorce this would be. It is a conspiracy or betrayal or, and I love this one, “Who knew the EU would insist we do what we agreed to do, of our own free will.”
Like the manager who ignores the warning from HR, that having an affair with his secretary is not a good idea. Six months later they find themselves living in a bedsit on their own, the wife has kept the house and the holiday home, gets alimony and child support and there are no visiting rights to see the children.
But don’t worry it isn’t his fault, the secretary, the wife, the law, the solicitor and the judge are to blame. His friends know the truth, his relatives know the truth, the neighbours know the truth, the stranger on the bus he rants to knows the truth, we all know the truth. But be fair, if you had made such a terrible mess would you admit it, even to yourself?
