Defence by HM Treasury
The “news” that there is no more money for the UK’s defence, coming just weeks before the budget sets of the warning sirens. When a small increase is actually announced, all will be Union Jacks and bunting.
But the fact is that in a time of European war the government is being very miserly with the Armed Forces. It has been hinting at cutting back the RN and RAF further to pay for the Army, playing one service off against another as if they are the real enemy.
The problem is not a shortage of money, if they wanted to spend more on defence they would find the money, it is that the Treasury won’t find the money to increase defence spending significantly because the government doesn’t want it to.
After all it has those pre election tax giveaways to save up for and that is far more important, to the government that is.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
