"Cutting" red tape.
Jacob Rees-Mogg is in the dog house, as the FT reports, the newly appointed Minister for Brexit Opportunities spotted one but unfortunately it was the wrong kind of opportunity.
JRM had a spiffing wheeze, why impose identical tests on UK companies to meet UK standards identical to the EU ones they have already passed? Why not let them use the well established and internationally respected CE testing system that they have been using for years?
Sorry Minister, that is the wrong sort of common sense because it is not Brexit common sense. The UK must have its own tests or what was the point of Brexit?
They do add billions in pointless costs and red tape for British business and importers to the UK, who may well not even bother paying for them.
But they are British tests, free, sovereign, oven ready, patriotic, Union Jack wrapped tests.
Therefore they are good tests Minister. Better luck next time.
Perhaps we should have a red tape measure, add up all the new Brexit red tape and then deduct all the EU red tape that has been cut?
So far the Brexit red tape is miles ahead and like common sense, almost out of sight.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
