Covid and no deal
Sorry I am late, I’ve been travelling and so listening to the Covid enquiry.
Almost missed among all the totally justifiable outrage at the shameless incompetence and uncaring arrogance of the Boris Johnson administration, revealed by the Covid enquiry; one little nugget is worth remembering.
Several witnesses have said that the total chaos, scale and range of issues and problems that preparing for a possible No Deal Brexit forced on the government, was excellent training for the Covid crisis.
Just think about that for a minute, Boris Johnson and cohorts of back bench loons literally told us that No Deal was better than a bad deal and in many cases that it would be better, no problem, a clean break etc.
Meanwhile, the whole of the government was distracted and stretched to breaking point by the preparations for a possible no deal, which would have been on the same scale as Covid. No wonder Johnson signed the TCA, any deal no matter how bad was better than no deal.
Even worse the government was incapable of doing anything else at the time because the possibility of a Brexit no deal was all consuming.
Also (and I really like this one) the Brexiteers thought we had the EU over a barrel because the threat of walking away without a deal would terrify THEM.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
